Obstetric emergencies, such as postpartum hemorrhage, eclampsia, and obstructed labor, are among the leading causes of maternal mortality worldwide. Effective management of these emergencies requires prompt, skilled, and coordinated responses from healthcare providers. Nurses, who are often the first point of contact in obstetric care, play a critical role in identifying, managing, and referring obstetric emergencies to specialized care when needed (World Health Organization, 2024). In Plateau State, the burden of obstetric emergencies remains high due to factors such as limited access to quality healthcare facilities, inadequate training, and resource constraints. The knowledge and practices of nurses in managing these emergencies are therefore paramount to improving maternal outcomes (Oluwole et al., 2023).
Research indicates that enhanced clinical training, simulation exercises, and continuous professional development significantly improve nurses' ability to manage obstetric emergencies (Bello et al., 2023). However, disparities in training opportunities and variations in clinical practices across different healthcare facilities often lead to inconsistent outcomes. In many parts of Plateau State, nurses may encounter obstacles such as a lack of updated protocols, insufficient emergency equipment, and high patient-to-nurse ratios, all of which can hinder effective emergency response (Chukwu et al., 2024).
Despite efforts to address these challenges, there is limited empirical data assessing the current state of nurses' knowledge and practices in obstetric emergency management in Plateau State. Understanding these gaps is essential for designing targeted interventions and training programs that enhance the competency of nursing staff. This study aims to evaluate the level of knowledge and practical skills among nurses in managing obstetric emergencies, thereby contributing to the reduction of maternal morbidity and mortality in the region.
Obstetric emergencies contribute significantly to maternal mortality in Plateau State, yet many cases are compounded by delays in recognition and suboptimal management by healthcare providers. Nurses are critical in the early detection and management of these emergencies; however, studies suggest that there may be considerable gaps in their knowledge and clinical practices. Factors such as limited access to continuous professional training, outdated protocols, and resource limitations exacerbate the challenges faced by nurses in managing obstetric emergencies (Ahmed & Yusuf, 2023).
In Plateau State, inconsistencies in the level of preparedness among nursing staff have been observed, leading to delayed interventions and increased risk of adverse outcomes. For instance, inadequate training in life-saving procedures such as neonatal resuscitation and emergency obstetric care has been linked to higher rates of maternal and neonatal complications. Additionally, variations in the availability of emergency equipment across healthcare facilities further compromise the quality of care provided during critical moments. The absence of standardized guidelines and effective supervisory mechanisms also contributes to the variability in clinical practices among nurses.
Without a comprehensive assessment of nurses’ knowledge and practices in this area, it is challenging to develop targeted interventions that could standardize care and improve patient outcomes. This study aims to fill this gap by systematically evaluating the competencies of nurses in managing obstetric emergencies, identifying key areas of deficiency, and proposing recommendations for policy and training improvements to enhance emergency obstetric care in Plateau State.
This study will focus on selected public and private healthcare facilities in Plateau State where obstetric services are provided. Limitations may include potential reporting biases from participants and variations in emergency management protocols across different institutions.
